Village Reforestation Advancement & Initiative

Christie Communications and Aid Still Required launched the Village Reforestation & Advancement Initiative (VRAI) to address desertification and deterioration of the green cover posing acute challenges to the arid regions of northern Africa. Cage Free Productions is partnering with this project and creating a multimedia platform to enhance the transfer of information between project members, facilitate greater awareness, and create a “best practices” module for scalable and sustainable development partnerships. We will also train local partners in multimedia production as well as facilitate their efforts to create their own content for future communication needs.
VRAI is a comprehensive program designed to reverse desert creep, reestablish arable land, and create vibrant local economies. The key focus of this model is to create forest belts each consisting of approximately 30,000 indigenous trees and running up to five miles in length. These belts protect villages from the encroaching deserts and provide livelihood opportunities. This replicable, community-based model addresses desertification and severe environmental degradation through the community-led development of forest belts, sustainable, organic agricultural lands, solar-powered irrigation systems, viable local industries, and a solar-powered learning center for the students. This model creates a platform for restoring the environment, the region’s natural resources and agricultural prosperity, and building a strong, local economy.
